Insurances in Spain - what you should know

Home > Blog

Spain is a popular destination for expatriates and second home owners, but it is also a country with its own legal and cultural peculiarities. If you live or own property in Spain, it is important to familiarise yourself with the necessary insurance policies to protect yourself and your belongings. In this blog post, I take a look at the most important insurances in Spain - both for private life and for residential property.

1. Health insurance: One of the most important insurances in Spain

Health insurance is essential for anyone living in Spain. Although the Spanish health system (Seguridad Social) offers public health care, many foreigners opt for private health insurance to gain access to additional benefits, shorter waiting times and greater flexibility.

Private health insurance

There are a large number of private providers in Spain that offer different tariffs for individuals, families or pensioners. Private health insurance (Seguro de enfermedad) usually covers visits to the doctor, hospitalisation and preventive check-ups. If you already have access to public health insurance, private insurance often offers additional benefits such as faster access to specialists or extended treatment options.

EU citizens

While as a holidaymaker with statutory health insurance here in Spain you are generally entitled to free or low-cost medical care via the Spanish health insurance fund (Seguridad Social) in an emergency, if you live here (and fulfil the requirements for this) you must register there separately. This is done, for example, for pensioners using the so-called S1 form. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not sufficient if you live permanently in Spain.

2. liability insurance: protection in the event of unforeseen incidents

Private liability insurance

Liability insurance (Seguro de responsabilidad civil) is also very important to protect yourself against unexpected claims for damages. In Spain, liability insurance covers damage that you unintentionally cause to third parties, whether through accidents or through the property you own.

This insurance is particularly important for expats living in a new environment. It protects you if, for example, you accidentally damage something in the supermarket or cause damage to someone in an accident. Household contents insurance in Spain often also offers a liability component.

3. household contents insurance: protection for your home

Contents insurance (Seguro de Hogar) is a very common and important insurance in Spain, especially if you live in a rented or your own property. This insurance usually covers damage caused by fire, flooding, theft or vandalism and protects both the building and the interior of the property (e.g. furniture, electronics and personal belongings).

Home ownership in Spain

Rented flat
Household contents insurance is important for tenants in Spain as well, as it protects the contents of the home. You should make sure that the insurance also covers damage caused by burglary and vandalism. If your tenancy agreement stipulates compulsory insurance for tenants, you can expect landlords to require this.

4. legal expenses insurance: help in the event of a dispute

In Spain, as in other countries, legal disputes can sometimes arise, be it with a neighbour, the landlord or problems with a service provider. Legal expenses insurance (Seguro de Defensa Jurídica) offers support in such cases by covering the costs of lawyers, court proceedings and other legal services.

5. vehicle insurance: compulsory for all vehicle owners

If you own a vehicle in Spain, vehicle insurance (Seguro de Coche) is a legal requirement. There are different types of car insurance, with third party liability insurance (Seguro a Terceros) being the basic cover. This covers damage that you cause to other road users. Comprehensive insurance (Seguro a Todo Riesgo) also provides cover for your own vehicle, even if you are the party responsible for the damage.

6. life insurance: protection for the future

Life insurance (Seguro de vida) is also widespread in Spain, particularly as a form of cover for the family in the event of illness or death. There are various life insurance products that offer benefits either only in the event of death or also in the event of serious illness or inability to work. These insurance policies are particularly important for expats who want to protect their family financially in the event of an emergency.

7. pet owner liability insurance: for pet owners in Spain

If you keep a pet in Spain, you should definitely consider taking out liability insurance for animals (Seguro de mascotas). This insurance has even been mandatory for dogs and their owners since May 2023. This insurance covers damage caused by the pet, such as a bite or damage to property.

Conclusion:

If you live or own property in Spain, it is essential to familiarise yourself with the different types of insurance to protect yourself and your property. Private health insurance, household contents insurance and liability insurance are often the most important insurances for good cover. For homeowners, building insurance and legal expenses insurance are also recommended.
